There are two common types of heat pumps today: air-to-water heat pump and water-to-water heat pump. Air-to-water heat pumps use outdoor air as a heating or cooling source, while water-to-water heat pumps use underground (water or geothermal) heat. The structure of a heat pump has 4 main parts.

How heat pump works

Heat pump, also known as "central water heater", is a machine that uses the principle of thermodynamics including 4 cycles:

-Evaporation stage (the heat carrier absorbs the ambient air temperature and heats up, evaporating into a warm gaseous heat carrier, the air loses heat and condenses into water on the evaporator.

-The compressor heats up the heatsink when a compressor force is applied to it.

– Condensing stage (the heat carrier when leaving the compressor is heated up to 100 degrees Celsius and enters the condenser, where it will transfer heat to the water to heat it up to the required temperature of 55 to 65 degrees Celsius and is led to the insulation tank to keep the temperature. 

-Expansion valve (after the heat carrier transfers heat to the hot water, it continues to pass through the expansion valve to form a closed loop.

Therefore, heat pump water heaters are the optimal solution to save energy for hot water needs of families or production facilities in hot and humid climates, such as Vietnam.

Heat pumps operate on the principle that heat will move from a place with high temperature to a place with low temperature. From there, the heat exchange core at low temperature will compare with the surrounding temperature and take heat from the surrounding environment, cooling the surrounding environment. Through the process of transferring heat to the surrounding environment, the heat exchanger will be heated to a temperature higher than the temperature of the environment.

The main components of a heat pump are the compressor, fan, evaporator, and condenser. The compressor requires electricity to compress and evaporate the refrigerant. The fan uses a small amount of electricity to continuously blow air across the condenser coil while the unit is running. The cost of electricity is the cost of electricity to operate the compressor and fan to collect free heat to heat the water.
